Springfield Felony Courts

Both courts handling Springfield felony cases share the same address at 50 State Street. The Springfield District Court, phone (413) 748-7730, handles arraignments and district-level criminal matters. Serious felony cases transfer to the Hampden County Superior Court at the same address, phone (413) 748-7760. The Superior Court handles felony trials and sentencing for the most significant criminal charges in Hampden County.

Most criminal cases in Springfield start at the District Court level. After arraignment and bail determination, cases may stay at the District Court if the charges are misdemeanors or low-level felonies. More serious felony charges, including those carrying state prison sentences, transfer to Superior Court. Both courts maintain separate dockets, so a thorough search should cover both.

Springfield Felony Records via CORI

Massachusetts keeps criminal history in the CORI system managed by the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services. DCJIS is at 200 Arlington Street, Chelsea, MA 02150, phone (617) 660-4600. CORI covers all Massachusetts felony convictions and pending charges, including every case out of Springfield and Hampden County. It is the definitive official source for criminal history in the state.

MGL Chapter 6 governs the CORI system and defines who can access criminal history data and for what purposes. Under that law, you can request your own CORI for $25. The fee is waived for those who cannot pay. The lookback period for most felony convictions is 10 years. Murder and sex offenses have no time limit. A dismissed charge or an acquittal may still show on a CORI for a period of time depending on when it occurred.

Sealing Springfield Felony Records

People with old Springfield felony convictions can petition to seal those records under MGL Chapter 276, Section 100A. The waiting period is seven years from the conviction date or release from incarceration, whichever comes last. After sealing, the record no longer appears in standard CORI checks. Courts, law enforcement, and some state agencies can still see sealed records in certain situations.

To petition for sealing in Springfield, you file at the court where the case was handled. Hampden County Superior Court cases get filed there. Springfield District Court cases get filed at the District Court. There is no fee to file a sealing petition. Once the court approves the petition, DCJIS updates the state record to reflect the sealed status.

Murder convictions and sex offense convictions cannot be sealed under this process. Those records are permanent. MassLegalHelp and Greater Boston Legal Services both have detailed guides on CORI rights and the sealing process that apply to Springfield residents. Local legal aid organizations in the Pioneer Valley can also assist with sealing petitions at no cost to those who qualify.

In-Person Access to Springfield Court Records

Both courts at 50 State Street are open to the public for in-person records access. Clerk's office staff can look up cases by name or case number and provide copies. You need a valid photo ID. Copy fees apply and vary by type. Certified copies cost more than plain paper copies. Call the Superior Court at (413) 748-7760 or the District Court at (413) 748-7730 before visiting to ask about fees and hours.

Older Springfield felony cases that predate the online docket system may only be accessible in person. If a case is old enough to be in paper archives, the clerk's office can tell you what is available and how long retrieval might take. In-person visits also let you review the full case file, not just the docket summary that appears online.
